The park
The castle opens northwards to a wide park, designed in the 17th century by the Parisian André Le Notre, who also designed the gardens of the Palace of Versailles. In the late 18th century, Pelagio Pelagi erected a series of small structures like the Doric Tempietto along the lake, a "Russian dacha" (built to honour tsar Nicholas II of Russia's visit to Piedmont), the Gothic church and others.

History
The castle, first built as a fortified palace between the land of the Savoia-Acaja family and the marquisade of Saluzzo, passed to the Savoia-Carignano cadet branch in 1620.
The castle has a distinctive majestic architecture and elaborate halls, complete with furniture, frescoes, statues, stuccos, chandeliers and a vast collection of paintings. The castle gardens are also worth mentioning, with their lake and scenic settings.
Many architects of international fame, such as André Le Nôtre, Guarino Guarini, Giovanni Battista Borra, Pelagio Palagi and Xavier Kurten, worked on the castle of Racconigi, making it an important European cultural and artistic centre.
The castle and the gardens have been State property since 1980, under the supervision of Piedmont region’s authorities. These first ten years of State running have focusedon renovations and works to make the castle safe for visits (which have been taking place since 1994). The property was extremely run down at the moment of purchase.
Since 2001 the National Lottery has helped fundnew renovations of the castle gardens, restoring their original Romantic style which had been inaugurated by Kurten
